Ethiopia also has more than 350 species of butterflies and more than 800 bird species, and has become one of Africa’s top birding destinations. The Great Rift Valley lakes are also along a key migratory route for many other bird species.
The altitude of the Ethiopian Highlands and the rugged mountain ranges support diverse plants and habitats, from Afro-alpine meadows and cloud forests, to stark semi-deserts and swaying grasslands. Then there are the lakes and wetlands of the Rift Valley, the ever-shrinking forests and the arid expanse of true deserts, each environment supporting unique flora and fauna.
The best way to experience Ethiopian wildlife is on foot or on horseback. We regularly include three of Ethiopia’s highest mountain ranges in our tours, for their wildlife, bird life and wonderful plants. The Simien Mountain National Park, the Bale Mountains National Park and the mountains of the Lasta Massif around Abune Yosef are each unique. The two national parks offer wonderful day hikes tailored to your ability and planned around what you would most like to see. In contrast, trekking to the top of Abune Yosef is a physical challenge that takes you off the beaten track while giving the chance to spot some of Ethiopia’s rarer birds and animals. Other popular wildlife destinations include Awash National Park and the Great Rift Valley lakes.
